About Janice Melnychuk
Janice has been a lifelong resident of Northeast Edmonton.
She graduated from Eastglen High School and went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology and Anthropology from the University of Alberta. Janice has operated her own small business and been a long time community volunteer. Her volunteer activities have ranged from building playgrounds to coming before City Council to speak on issues. She served as; president of Newton Community League and Newton Playschool, as a member of the Beacon Heights and Highlands Parent Councils and the Board of the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues. She was elected for 6 years as a Public School Trustee for Ward B before her election to Council in 2001. As a trustee she was Edmonton's representative to the Alberta School Boards Association for 3 years.
With her husband, Ed, she has raised their two children. Janice loves cooking, gardening, and dancing and in her spare time she aspires to improve her Ukrainian language skills.
Worked for our Northeast Communities
- Successful in getting financial commitments from City Council:
- For the Fort Road Redevelopment Plan ($16 million)
- For widening 153 Avenue to four lanes, 50th Street Completion
- For finishing the Clareview Skateboard Park
- Advocated for strong communities and community renewal:
- Redevelopment of the Highlands Safeway Store site on 118 Avenue & 66 Street
- Completion of the Londonderry Pool Revitalization and Expansion
- Secured funding to save and renovate Sprucewood Library
- Initiated community meeting about crime and safety that resulted in the expansion of the Police Beat Patrols & Neighbourhood Empowerment Team (NET) along 118th Avenue communities
- Careful review of developments to protect public interest such as the Belmont Adult Urban Village concept and parkland integrity in Matt Berry
- City trees finally planted on 137th Avenue and negotiated for more trees to be planted by developers
